In 1545 writer William Turner was the first to coin the phrase “Birds of a feather flock together.” It was based on his observations of Starlings. They seemed to move in unison in large flocks. But when other birds would approach they would move away. 400 years later psychologist Robert Frances Winch studied spouses in the 1950s and came to the conclusion that it wasn’t similarities that made a relationship work, rather, it was differences. Well, a major new study is in and it dramatically affects how we think about the LGBTQ+ community. After all, Lesbians are different than gay men. Bisexuals have an attraction to both. The trans community argues it is not even about sex but rather gender. And don’t even get me started on Queer+. Important to note, some have observed the difficulty inside our community and outside our community is that we were pushed together into one neatly packaged acronym. So the study has consequences. The findings? Overwhelmingly … we want what is referred to as … same-ness. Race the same. Economic standing the same. Education the same. Work as relationship the same. The conclusion of the study, more than 80% of us want the same as us. However “us” is defined. So our hot topic this week is “Birds Of A Feather Flock Together Even In LGBTQ+ Community.
