The Mormon-run Brigham Young University has a large LGBTQ+ student population. With BYU policy mirroring that of the church, LGBTQ+ clubs are not allowed to meet on campus. The RaYnbow Collective, a nonprofit group supporting the LGBTQ+ community at BYU, holds an annual celebration to kick off the school year at a park nearby. The event is family-friendly, allowing students to attend with their loved ones. The event included a drag show. This year, police warned the RaYnbow Collective to expect a large group of protesters to attend this year's event. Aftering learning about the protests, a group of volunteers from the community chose to create a visual barrier by donning 'angel' costumes with large white wings so that LGBTQ+ celebrants and allies wouldn't have their day ruined by the conservative protesters.
