In a recent interview with Unapologetically Queer, Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren spoke out about his recent conflict with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, stating that he is not afraid of the governor’s wrath.
Warren has been a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and criminal justice reform, which has put him at odds with DeSantis, who has been pushing a conservative agenda. In response to Warren’s advocacy, DeSantis cut funding to his office and accused him of being soft on crime.
But Warren remains unafraid, stating in the interview: “If you’re asking would I have changed what I did and what I said to avoid the governor’s wrath… absolutely not. I would do exactly everything the same way as I did it before. That’s what Freedom’s about.”
Warren’s passion for criminal justice reform is unwavering, and he believes that he is fulfilling his duty as State Attorney by speaking out against injustice and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. Despite the challenges he faces, Warren is committed to continuing his work and serving the people of Hillsborough County.
“I’ve always been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights,” Warren said. “I believe that everyone deserves to be treated equally, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Warren’s advocacy for the LGBTQ community has put him at odds with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who recently signed into law a bill banning transgender women and girls from participating in female sports teams. Warren, who has been a vocal critic of the law, says that it is discriminatory and goes against the principles of fairness and equality.
“Governor DeSantis has made it clear that he doesn’t care about the LGBTQ community,” Warren said. “But I’m not afraid of the king. I would do everything the same way as I did before. That’s what freedom’s about.”
When asked about his future plans, Warren said that he is passionate about criminal justice and would run for State Attorney again if given the chance.
“I would be the state attorney and run for election all over again,” Warren said. “I’m passionate about criminal justice, and we’ve been doing great things in Hillsborough. If you’re asking would I have changed what I did and what I said to avoid the governor’s wrath? Absolutely not. I should be free to speak my mind and do what I promised the people of Hillsborough County I would do as a state attorney.”
Warren’s unwavering commitment to justice and equality has earned him praise from the LGBTQ community and beyond. As the battle over transgender rights continues to heat up in Florida and across the country, Warren’s voice will no doubt be a crucial one in the fight for equality.
