Actors' Equity Association, the national labor union representing more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theatre, has issued a statement regarding the growing number of attacks on transgender people, often framed as attacks on drag performances.
Founded in 1913, Equity endeavors to advance the careers of its members by negotiating wages, improving working conditions, and providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension.
The statement mentioned that their concern for the safety of theatre workers and audience members goes beyond the theatre walls. The actors' Equity Association talked about the attacks on performers and said that these attacks are part of the larger effort to rob transgender people of their constitutional rights. It promised to stand with the transgender members and called for an end to physical, legislative, and other attacks.
