After Stella Keating testified in favor of the Equality Act on Wednesday, the Trans student still had to finish school for the day. “I’m making history,” she told her high school fellow students. After she testified she said she was going to her world history class. Stella, a 16-year-old sophomore in Tacoma, Washington, was one of three people to address the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding the landmark civil rights legislation, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives for the second time in February. Her speech marks the first time the Equality Act — which would guarantee comprehensive protections in areas like housing, education, and health care — has received a hearing in the upper house of Congress since it was first introduced in 1974. As the lone student among the group of panelists, she told the committee that the bill has constantly been on her mind as she looks for colleges. She said the the Senate committe “All I can think about is this: less than half of the states in our country provide equal protection for me under the law,” she told lawmakers. “What happens if I want to attend college in a state that doesn’t protect me? Right now, I could be denied medical care or be evicted for simply being transgender in many states. How is that even right? How is that even American?”
