Kataluna Enriquez has made history as Nevada’s first openly trans winner of the Miss Silver State USA beauty pageant. 27-year-old has qualified to compete in Miss USA. If the Nevada winner takes the crown in Miss USA, Enriquez will qualify to take part in Miss Universe. She previously competed in a 2016 transgender pageant, but this is her first entrance as a cis-gendered participant. As a competitor, Enriquez said she is using her platform to be a point of representation, to discuss healthcare access for the trans community, and to speak out about the barriers she has faced due to her identity and the LGBTQ community. She spoke in the pageant of these challenges. She said “Growing up, I was often told that I was not allowed to be myself, or to be in spaces that I was not welcome. One of the obstacles I encounter every day is just being true to myself. Today I am a proud transgender woman of color. Personally, I’ve learned that my differences do not make me less than, it makes me more than.” Everyone at Queer News Tonight recognizes the history that Kataluna Enriquez represents for the Trans community and for the entire LGBTQ community.
