Nyad, who made history in 2013 by becoming the first person to report swimming from Cuba to Florida without the use of a protective shark cage, has changed her stance after previously publicly opposing trans women taking part in women’s sports. She wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post in 2022 arguing against trans women’s inclusion in elite sports on women’s teams. Since then, however, Nyad explained that she has done a lot of deep-dive thinking, and her views have evolved. Diana Nyad added in the interview that all women are negatively affected by trans women being targeted by discrimination and abuse in sports and elsewhere.
