Lawsuit Challenges Discrimination in California Charter Schools Over Faith-Based Homeschooling

A recently filed lawsuit in California has brought to light allegations of discrimination against parents who homeschool their children with faith-based curricula. The lawsuit targets education officials, including superintendents, executive directors, school boards, and staff within the San Juan Unified School District and Maricopa Unified School District, as well as the state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond. The plaintiffs, John and Breanna Woolard, Hector and Diana Gonzales, and Carrie Dodson, devout Christians raising school-age children, assert that their religious faith is central to their identity and worldview. They argue that they have faced discrimination in accessing state funds for curriculum, materials, and classes with religious perspectives. According to the California Department of Education, independent programs within the public school system aim to provide parents with expanded choices in education. These programs offer access to state funds for a variety of educational opportunities, including extracurricular activities. The lawsuit raises questions about equal access for families who choose faith-based homeschooling. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for religious freedom and education in California.
