Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile abruptly resigned from his position Wednesday evening, but the Board of Trustees held off accepting his resignation at an emergency board meeting Thursday morning until they could find out what led to his decision. Like many of the community members who spoke at the emergency session, board members said they were shocked to learn of Haile’s resignation and needed to understand more about his decision before determining what action they should take. The trustees agreed they wanted to see if the issue was fixable. Some members, though, including Chairperson Alexis Yarbrough, whom Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed to the board in February along with two others, acknowledged an agreement may not be up to them. Alexis Yarbrough said, “There have been some difficult business questions in meetings, but there has been no indication to indicate that the board desired this outcome.” She does not know if the board has any control on the outcome. Haile, who remains in his role as a result of the board’s decision, was not at the meeting. The board decision came a little more than an hour after the emergency meeting began and after about a dozen speakers, including those in the business community, urged board members to do whatever they can do to keep Haile as the college’s leader and not let him go
