A man has been arrested in connection with a homophobic stabbing incident that occurred outside a nightclub in Clapham, South London, according to a statement by the Metropolitan Police. The attack unfolded shortly after 10 pm on Sunday, August 13, outside the Two Brewers nightclub.
Two men, both in their 20s and 30s, were standing outside the venue when they were approached by an assailant armed with a knife. The attacker inflicted injuries on both victims before fleeing the scene. Both victims were subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries and have since been discharged.
The incident sent shockwaves through London’s LGBTQ+ community, highlighting the ongoing challenges of violence and discrimination faced by marginalized communities.
On September 7, the Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of a 19-year-old man in South Norwood on suspicion of two counts of grievous bodily harm (GBH). The individual remains in police custody as the investigation progresses.
Detective Superintendent Vanessa Britton commented on the arrest, stating, “This arrest marks a significant development in our investigation. The two victims have been informed and continue to be supported by our officers, including our dedicated LGBT+ Community Liaison Officer (CLO).”
She also acknowledged the concern and distress caused by the incident within the LGBT+ community and reassured Londoners that a dedicated team of officers is diligently working on the case.
