One of the most discussed topics that affect LGBTQ+ equality is the hate speech we face from the religious and evangelical community. Made clear from the 1990’s and Jerry Falwell's ‘moral majority’ to the Southern Baptist Convention, Liberty University, Mormon financing of California’s prop 8 to the violence seen from Westboro Baptist Church, the LGBTQ+ community often suffers from PTSD from the rejection of religion. But in the darkness of these organizations our community also is seeing a new light at the end of the tunnel. More and more religious organizations and churches are voicing support of our community. Marching in pride parades and embracing LGBTQ+ as a respected part of the broader community. So when Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins talked about the religious communities support of LGBTQ he made news. Watkins leads the largest Queer Church in the world at Fort Lauderdale's Sunshine Cathedral. His words on the state of religion in America may be something you have not heard before.
