Florida Republicans, led by Governor Ron DeSantis, are once again attacking the LGBTQ+ community. Last night, we fought back. In this week’s SFGN, online and on stands tomorrow, I look at how our community is trying to make some noise as DeSantis and his GOP enablers score cheap election year points at the expense of LGBTQ+ Youth. A pair of bills are speeding through the legislature that says schools, “May not encourage in classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.” Last night, about 300 people rallied at the Pride Center to say: Enough! Queer News Tonight went on location and turned the show over to people affected the most by this attack: LGBTQ+ youth. They did great, and articulated the problem from a point of view none of us can have. It’s going to take a lot of work, and a little luck, to defeat the “Don’t Say Gay” bills. But it’s important we stand up to the loathsome hate and bigotry oozing out of Tallahassee.
