Queer News Tonight has repeatedly reported on the assault of a gay couple at Miami Beach Pride in 2018. The four defendants — Juan Carlos Lopez, Luis M. Alonso Piovet, Adonis Diaz, and Pablo Reinaldo Romo-Figueroa — are charged with battery under Florida’s “hate-crime” enhancement, which increases penalties for committing a crime “with prejudice." In a long-drawn-out court battle, the defendants attempted to invoke Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law that allows for violence in self-defense. On Friday, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan threw out the defense saying, “There’s nothing in that video — and I watched it over and over again — that showed me that any of these defendants was in fear for their safety or their lives." The case is now expected to go to trial after nearly 3 years.
