Transgender activist Jowelle De Souza has become the first openly transgender senator in Trinidad and Tobago. She is filling-in for the ailing Sen. Jayanti Lutchmedial, a member of the United National Congress, a center-left opposition party. De Souza posted a picture of her being sworn in with the caption, "Always happy to serve my country." In 1993, she became the first person in the country to undergo gender confirmation surgery. Trinidad and Tobago’s nondiscrimination laws do not include gender identity and sexual orientation, and De Souza has been arrested in the past for her activism.
