A Catholic University Advisor, a Lesbian, and a Rabbi walk into a bar. "Hi, I'm Camille Angel" she said. Jokes aside, a Jesuit Catholic university appointing a rabbin-in-residence, especially a lesbian activist rabbi, is almost unheard of. In an interview Rabbi Angel said, “I was trained and I’m a rabbi to serve Jews, and I do — I led a shiva two nights ago, so I’m definitely still serving Jews. But there’s something remarkable for me and totally unexpected about my rabbinate being primarily among non-Jews at this point and that my teaching is primarily with non-Jews.” According to Angel, there is only one Jewish student in her “Queering Religion” class of 40. The other students represent a mix of religious affiliations, but they gravitate to Angel’s classes and programs because of the inclusive queer community she has cultivated on campus.
