In the past two years, state lawmakers in nearly three dozen states across the country have introduced more than 300 bills targeting trans-Americans, 86% focusing on trans youth. Idit Klein’s article in The Forward says, “Our own democracy is being used to harm the LGBTQ community.” Sam, a transmasculine kid from Florida talked to Klein saying, “It feels bleak right now in Florida.” The bleakness to which Sam refers is the Florida Board of Medicine’s proposed ban on providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender young people. Interacting with other LGBTQ+ Jewish youth, Klein sees three messages consistently- It is hard, they’re not giving up, and they’re looking to their Jewish communities for support and action.
