On Sunday, the Oak Garden United Methodist Church self-appointed two LGBTQ+ pastors after their requests for appointments were rejected by the bishop of North Texas. Rev. Rachel Baughman appointed Isabel Marquez and Ryan Wagner, who identify as lesbian and gay, without the authorization of the North Texas Convention of the United Methodist Church, an act considered 'civil disobedience.' Of the appointment, Baughman said, “Whereas we might lack ecclesial authority to formally appoint Isabel and Ryan, we declare the ethical authority to acknowledge the decision of God upon their lives and have fun and bless their work of pastoral ministry."
