A new Pew Research Center poll shows that the number of people who identify with a gender other than the one assigned at birth may be higher than previously thought. On average, 1.6% of the adult population in the US identifies as a transgender man, transgender woman, or nonbinary. Adults under 30 are far more likely to identify as other than cisgender, with slightly over 2% identifying as a trans male or female, and slightly over 3% identifying as nonbinary. 44% of adults now say they personally know someone who is trans, up from 37% in 2017. 20% of adults say they know someone who is non-binary. This increase in visibility is beneficial in the fight for gender-affirming care and transgender rights.
