On July 1st, the Parental Rights in Education law took effect. Many school boards are still fighting against some of the provisions, and debating if they should be adopted. Yesterday, the Duval County School Board voted 7-0 to change their support services for students in compliance with the law. One specific provision of concern was if educators have to alert parents if a student requests a change to their support services, for example a change to preferred name or pronouns. For many students who may not have a safe environment at home, this could mean being outed to potentially abusive parents. The school board also removed an anti-bullying video from the district's website that gave tips on how students could be allies to LGBTQ+ students who were facing bullying.
