Once Upon a Time, there was a little black girl from the Brewster Projects of Detroit, Michigan... In 1993, those words, spoken by The Black Queen Of Comedy, LaWanda Page, started a song that would bring an aspiring young actor and performer out of obscurity and into the spotlight. RuPaul Charles would go from the gender-bending frontman of a rock group called "Wee Wee Pole" to a drag superstar seemingly overnight. RuPaul has gone from a middle-class club performer to one of the most prominent black entertainers in America, and has brought LGBTQ+ issues and drag into popular culture.
