On Friday, the European Commission announced that it was taking Hungary to the Court of Justice for the European Union. They allege that the country is violating laws on media freedom and LGBTQ+ rights, refusing to renew a radio license for independent Hungarian media Klubradio and passing a law that prevents children and teenagers from accessing content about LGBTQ+ issues. The commission argues that the refusal to renew the radio license go against the Audiovisual Media Services Directive and the e-Commerce Directive, and that the LGBTQ+ content restrictions go against the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU and Treaty of the EU — and the EU Charter of fundamental rights.
