Fifteen years ago, surveys showed that 57 percent of Hispanic individuals called themselves Catholic, but recent surveys show that the number is now less than 47%. During that same time, those describing themselves as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular” increased from 16 to 23 percent. A large part of that change is attributed to partisan politics. As religions become associated more and more with the Republican party, the large number of Latin Americans who identify as Democrats begin to separate from the church. While attendance in church may be diminishing, many Latin families still hold traditional religious social views, and that can cause issues for those who are trying to come out as LGBTQ+ to their families.
