As a representative of California’s 42nd District, Democratic lawmaker Robert Garcia has been pushing for the expulsion of fellow gay and Republican freshman lawmaker George Santos from Congress due to his alleged fraudulent activities. Garcia trolled Santos on Twitter with a RuPaul meme that read “Sashay Away,” referring to Santos’s drag name Kitara.
The feud between the two lawmakers started when Garcia sponsored a resolution to have Santos expelled from Congress due to his pattern of fraud and deception, which Garcia finds worrisome for the LGBTQ+ community. However, as Republicans currently control the House, the resolution is unlikely to pass.
Santos has been accused of lying about his work history, including his employment at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, which he now claims were simply resume embellishments. Despite these allegations, Santos has tried to downplay his lies in various interviews.
Garcia’s trolling of Santos may seem light-hearted, but the resolution to expel him from Congress is a serious matter. The accusations against Santos are not only damaging to his own reputation but also to the LGBTQ+ community. The fact that Garcia, a fellow gay lawmaker, is leading the charge against Santos highlights the importance of accountability and integrity in politics.
