In 2012, Stuart Delery was appointed acting associate attorney general, the Justice Department's #3 position. With that appointment he became the highest-ranking LGBTQ+ person in that department's history. While in that role, he argued against President Clinton's Defense of Marriage Act that barred legal same-sex unions. After the landmark Obergefell vs Hodges case that overturned that law, he oversaw the implementation of the Supreme Court's decision. President Biden has appointed him as White House counsel, making him the first LGBTQ+ person to hold that position when he assumes the role next month.
