As America paused to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's legacy, experts say his fight against poverty and inequality is still just as relevant today as it was during the US civil rights movement.
Here are 10 little-known facts about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
1. The famous 'I have a dream' speech was improvised. Halfway through his speech in 1963, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson shouted, "Tell them about the dream, Martin!" that prompted King to pivot to a sermon he had previously delivered.
2. The birth name of MLK was Michael King, but his father changed his own name and the king’s name to Martin Luther King.
3. King decided at college to become a preacher.
4. In his 13 years as a civil rights leader, King was arrested 30 times, largely for misdemeanors and civil protest violations, according to the King Center.
5. According to the King Center, King wrote five books throughout his lifetime and published numerous collections of his letters and sermons.
