On the evening of August 23, men who identified themselves as members of the militant group Jnoud El-Rab – also known as the Soldiers of God – attacked LGBTQ+ friendly venue Madame Om in the bustling Mar Mikhael area of the Lebanese capital of Beirut. The Soldiers of God is a right-wing Christian group who holds anti-LGBTQ+ views and seeks to purge anything remotely queer from the neighborhoods. The group sees itself as the moral protector of Lebanon. Speaking with PinkNews, a member of the LGBTQ+ community who was at the bar on the evening of the attack said the situation was a “mixture of terror, anxiety, and an uncertainty that we’ll make it out alive”.
