Buffalo Officials and Club Marcella Owners Discuss Next Steps Following Shootings: Investigation by New York State Liquor Authority Following Shootings

  • February 14, 2023

Four people have been shot at Club Marcella, a popular nightclub in Buffalo, in the past two weeks, with one fatality. While the shootings do not appear to be related, they are believed to be acts of senseless violence resulting from personal disagreements. The club has been known for years as a welcoming environment for Buffalo's LGBTQ community, but the police commissioner stated that the shootings do not seem to be targeted at the community.

Fillmore Council Member Mitch Nowakowski, who is Buffalo's first openly gay man to serve on the Council, expressed sadness over the incidents and stated that the shootings should not deter efforts to make the Cobblestone District, where the club is located, an appealing place for entertainment. Nowakowski also noted that the club's owners have been good neighbors since relocating to Michigan Avenue last year and have developed relationships with other businesses in the area and the Buffalo police.

The police are investigating the shootings, but no arrests have been made yet. The club's owner did not respond to messages seeking comment, but the club has been cooperative with the police investigation. The police are reviewing video footage to identify the suspect, and they have made progress in their investigation.

While the shootings are tragic and horrific, Nowakowski does not necessarily believe that the city should move swiftly to shut down the bar, as the club's owners have taken steps to improve security, and nightlife is a part of life that people should be able to enjoy without the fear of violence.

Club Marcella in Buffalo, New York, is under investigation by the New York State Liquor Authority (SLA) after two shootings occurred in the establishment. The first shooting took place on January 29, where a 36-year-old security guard was shot in the parking lot. The second shooting took place on February 12, where three people were shot during an argument inside the club. One victim, a 21-year-old Buffalo man, died at the scene, while the other two victims were taken to local hospitals and reported as stable.

The SLA issued a statement regarding the incidents, stating that they had already been investigating the premises due to previous incidents, and the authority is working closely with the Buffalo Police Department to gather all necessary reports. The investigation is ongoing, and the SLA has pledged to take all appropriate actions at its conclusion.

Club Marcella has been a popular destination for Buffalo's LGBTQ community for years. However, the shootings do not appear to be related to the community, according to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph A. Gramaglia. The shootings appear to be isolated incidents resulting from personal disagreements and are not considered to be hate crimes.

Local officials and club owners have assured the public that they are taking measures to improve security, and the investigation is ongoing. Nightlife is an integral part of life, and people should be able to enjoy it without fear of violence. As such, authorities must work diligently to ensure the safety of all patrons at Club Marcella and other establishments in the area.
