During the election season, Queer News Tonight made frequent mention of a “rainbow wave” in US elections. The Victory Institute has compiled data on just how many openly LGBTQ+ politicians are now in office, and the numbers bring us hope. These numbers do not reflect appointments, such as cabinet positions. Currently in the US, there are 986 elected officials serving. While that number is excellent, it represents just 0.19% of all elected officials in the country. The specific numbers of LGBTQ+ elected officials in office are as follows: 2 Governors, 11 Members of the US Congress, 6 State-level positions, 56 Mayors, 189 Members of State Legislature, 601 Local officials, and 121 Judicial positions.
